A MESSAGE FROM THE UMPIRE-IN-CHIEF

Chadwyck Stoianoff

I am fortunate to umpire some of the best high school programs in the Salem and Portland areas. Jesuit. Sunset. Lake Oswego. North Medford. Lakeridge. West Linn.* I've also been fortunate to umpire some of state's not best programs.

What's the common thread that links the quality programs? Their coaches are organized; have excellent communication with their players; They plan; Their players fully support one another and respect their coaches.

Most importantly, these coaches are good role models for their players. They've figured out that they can only control what they can control, and model this to their players and parents

No matter how hideous the ball, strike, or out, I have never witnessed these coaches argue or question an umpire's call.

Never.

Why? They weigh the effects of their actions of a single situation against their ultimate goal: Yes, winning . . . and doing their part to raise well-rounded and healthy coaches of tomorrow.

They understand the big picture.
Successful coaches and umpires alike recognize that we are role models for our youth. We all are. We can't control the judgements of an umpire,  but we can best prepare for outcomes out of our control.

Let us not teach our youth to blame failure and successes upon others.

After all, we've only ourselves to blame or pat upon our backs. ðŸ™‚

Coaches -
Reminder:
  • Judgement calls cannot be argued.
  • IF you feel the other umpire may have had a better view of a called out, please politely call time and:
    • Meet with the umpire that made the call
    • Ask, "Could you ask for help on that last play?"
    • The umpire has two options with this request:
      • Replies that he/she saw the play clearly and requires no help. Play stands. Coach returns to dugout.
      • Replies, "OK Coach. I will,." Coach returns to dugout as umpire meets with partner to decide the final call. Umpire announces and/or signals final decision to all players & coaches.
    • In both instances, play continues.
  • Always feel free to call/text/email me with questions and kudos.
*I would list Wells HS, but I cannot (and will not) umpire Wells games because of my son.
